Walk on the Wild Side With Decorative Concrete

In Nebraska City, Nebraska, the city council just had a very important vote. In addition to a number of improvement items for the area including walking and bike trails and other issues, approval was granted to construct concrete overlaid crosswalks.

Lately, the use of various forms of decorative concrete, such a stamped and polished concrete, have come to the fore and are being used more and more Nebraska City is no exception. Their vote to create the concrete overlaid crosswalks was based on aesthetics and beauty, practicality and durability.
In trying to beautify the area in a creative way, using decorative concrete overlay on top of the old crosswalks.

The new crosswalks, because of the concrete overlay, will be durable, since it will be overlaid, colored and sealed in such a way that it will be easy to maintained. Plus, if need be, it can be easily re-colored or textured if the wear and tear begins to show after a few years.

The fact that a city feels that the beauty and durability of decorative concrete overlay will withstand the elements and the daily wear and tear of people, bicycles and cars, shows that this same treatment or a similar one in your backyard around flowerbeds, a pool or a Jacuzzi, and it will stand up to he elements and wear and tear at your home.

In addition, there are so many versatile ways to use decorative concrete, and versatile colors and textures to enhance your home inside or out. Entryway walls textured with colored concrete and enhanced by polished concrete floors can be both exquisite and welcoming. Resurface And Save Money!

If your concrete is not looking as fabulous as it once did, if years of wear and tear and taking away the beauty that once was, why not resurface the concrete. Resurfacing is great way to take the old concrete and make it look new, at a fraction of the cost of a completely new slab.

Stenciling is a great way to add a pattern when planning to resurface cement. Stenciling allows a design to be laid over the cement before resurfacing. Because the design goes on top of the concrete, the possibilities are endless. The other nice thing about stenciling is that the design need not be perfect. Your design may range form conservative to flamboyant.

Standard stencil patterns are available but it is also possible that one could design their own-stenciled look by using nylon fiber tape and arranging in a pattern that suits the surrounding décor.

If your driveway, patio or concrete slab has seen its last days and must be removed, it is always possible to lay fresh concrete, and of course stenciling is still a workable solution and a very creative idea.

The stencils consist of a pattern of grout lines. The stencils can create patterns of bricks, stones, or other natural elements.

If you are looking to work on a budget and create a totally unique look while enhancing the stain resistance and durability of your old concrete, think resurfacing, and in that way everything old will be new again.

Honorable Mention – Poem On Concrete

I realized while surfing the net that we all take certain things for granted. One of the items we take for granted is concrete.

Oregon and Washington State have decided they will no longer aid and abet this trend of failing to recognize the Superstars of the concrete industry. I found this article on www.constructionpros.com. An important component of the building process, often unsung, will be honored at this year’s Excellence in Concrete awards.

Presented by the Oregon Concrete & Aggregate Producers Association and the Oregon Chapter of the American Concrete Institute, the April 11 awards ceremony will recognize architects, engineers, contractors, finishers and ready-mix suppliers that have excelled in the use of concrete in Oregon and Southwest Washington construction projects.

The nominated projects have been narrowed down to three finalists in thirteen categories. In the bridge category, the finalists are the Collier’s Promenade Bridge/Spring Creek U.S. Route 97, Depot Street Bridge/Rogue River Bridge replacement, and the Vancouver Land Bridge.

In the commercial category, the finalists are the Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Medford, Market of Choice and Stoller Winery.

I was so inspired I decided to write a poem.

Ode to Concrete
I think that I shall never see anything as lovely as concrete
Concrete gives me a place to walk
Concrete offers a curb to sit and talk
White concrete is way less hot than the black top
All though I never thought of it before
I want to thank them men who pour!

For those of you who are thinking, Wow! she missed her calling, I know what you mean. That is my only poem and was brought on by the awards ceremony.

Paying The Price For Good Concrete Work

I recently came across an add for stained concrete installed for .95 cents a square foot. Wow! I almost fell off my chair. How can someone advertise this when you can’t even buy the right products for that price; let alone labor, insurance, phones and business expenses? I understand that we all should try to find the best deal, but does that mean the cheapest? How on earth can you expect a proper installation for 2$ less that the average going rate?

When companies decide to secure jobs solely based on price, than it is the end user that should be aware that you get what you pay for! When the system flakes, delaminates, looses its color in a year and looks bad, don’t blame the products or system – blame the installation company who didn’t use the right amount, proper surface preparation or type of material for the job.

Everyone knows that you can dilute and thin out a paint and it will still color a wall. The problem comes when you decide to wipe or clean the wall. The paint will come off and the same goes for decorative concrete.

When decorative concrete is installed properly and done right it will often outlast many other types of decorative finishes.

Lets remember though, low bidders who cannot afford to do the job correctly cannot install a system that will last. So perhaps when you’re selecting a company for your next project, you may consider throwing out the low bidder and going with #2. In fact, many experienced general contractors do exactly that. We can learn from their experience.

Also let’s keep in mind, companies that make a profit will also be around a year or two from now to help with any issue or problems that may arise. ‘Fly by nighters’ are gone in the wind! Support the companies that choose to do things right and you will be glad you did when years from now you are still enjoying your Decorative Concrete Finish.

          Booming Outdoor Living Trend

Booming Outdoor Living Trend Leads to “Concrete Ideas”

With all of the hype these days on outdoor living, a new website spotlights “concrete ideas” with creative ways to spruce up your landscape, patio, deck, or pool area using decorative concrete technology.

(PRWEB ) April 17, 2007 — Imagine; images of relaxing with the sun or moon beaming down in an environment that has all the comforts of home. A view of the sky, the stars and a subtle refreshing breeze echoing with sounds of nature, only possible when you’re outside; this is outdoor living at it’s finest.

Last year, 48% of 600 residential architecture firms surveyed reported that upscale landscaping is on the increase, as is the popularity of outdoor living spaces such as decks, porches, patios and small courtyards instead of the traditional large backyards, according to the American Institute of Architects’ first Home Design Trends Survey.

How important are these spaces? According to an NAHB survey of home- buyers, an outdoor living space such as a deck or patio is a “must have.” If you build a deck, the average return on your investment is about 75%. And if return on investment is not of interest, then the pure enjoyment of a beautiful backyard retreat may be.

The obvious durability and functionally of concrete makes it a popular material of choice when creating the ultimate outdoor living environment, but what about design? For many people, concrete has been thought of as a dull, boring and drab finish. Others see little hope if any, in reviving the old concrete that they already have surrounding their dwellings.

www.concreteideas.com, an online resource for everything Decorative Concrete, allows the consumer to explore the exciting options for using decorative concrete for their outdoor living spaces.

Whether the idea is to revive an existing patio, walkway, pathway, or to start fresh with a newly poured concrete slab, technology in the world of concrete offers up many exciting design options. The idea of ripping out the ugly existing concrete is a thing of the past and cost effective decorative concrete resurfacing systems and overlayments can be used to beautify an existing surface.

Informative articles, inspiring photos and thousands of ideas are all available at concreteideas.com.

Great information is available on ideas such as stamped concrete, exposed aggregate finish, chemical acid stain, (often referred to as acid etched concrete), engraved concrete, painted concrete, broom finish, concrete paving or patio stones, concrete fireplace surrounds, concrete countertops, furniture and more.

Another free resource available to visitors of the site is the ‘find a local contractor section’ , which immediately links consumers with professional contractors in their area.
