It used to be that when we thought of concrete, we thought of just a few things, such as sidewalks, driveways and cement slab house foundations. Most of the time the concrete used has been a pretty dull gray. Once in a while, for instance, in some southwestern towns, we could find some sidewalks that were various shades of rust and orange that mimic the beautiful mountains in their midst.

In the past decade, however, concrete has changed from a basic utility to a decorative enhancement, a creative and artistic essential in creating the mood of resorts and homes throughout the world. Decorative Concrete is More Flexible Than You Think

My family and I live in a small town in the western United States. It’s one of those proverbial one-horse towns. Main Street is five miles long at best. Traffic stops at our main intersection several times per year when, in the middle of the day, ranchers move their sheep from the highlands to the lowlands and vice-versa, so they can be in the right place as the seasons change. Because there is no exact time that this is done, we often find ourselves sitting at a stoplight or top sign on Main Street while waiting for the sheep to get where they’re going. We don’t have a mall, a Costco or a Target, and we just got a Starbucks a few months ago!

Even in a pretty small town like mine, where horses live next door, or down the street and cows graze in the fields around the corner from us, there are modern and beautiful methods of decorative concrete used in a lot of areas. Venetian Plaster Still Opulent after Centuries

The wealthy in Italy used an art form with concrete called Venetian Plaster to create an elegant look for their walls. This method of creating walls has lasted through the centuries, and weathered the ravages of time and the elements very well. This art has been found on the walls of Egyptian and Greek tombs and was written about during the Roman Empire. During the Renaissance, many homes were covered with this to show their wealth. The finest example of Venetian Plaster can be found in Venice, Italy. Not only have they stood for centuries; they show no signs of decay. Because it was used so widely in Venice, its name became Venetian Plaster.
